Judith Lynne Hanna

Judith Lynne Hanna earned her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Columbia University. An affiliate Senior Research Scientist at the University of Maryland, she is interested in the relationship between art and society. Hanna has conducted research on how dance communicates in villages and cities in Africa, theaters, school playgrounds and classrooms, and adult entertainment exotic dance (stripping) clubs in the U.S. Her books include Dance, Sex and Gender: Signs of Identity, Dominance, Defiance and Desire. Since 1995, she has served as an expert court witness nationwide in nearly 150 First Amendment and other cases related to exotic dance. Her testimony is quoted in court decisions and the media, and her research appears in numerous articles, in, e.g., Journal of Arts Management Law and Society, Journal of Planning Literature, Journal of Sex Research, Minnesota Law and Politics Web Magazine, and Exotic Dancer ’92s Club Bulletin.

University of Texas Press has scheduled Hanna’s book, Naked Truth: A Christian Right, Strip Clubs and Democracy for publication in 2012.
