A Ceremonial Resolution in the Council of the District of Columbia

To recognize the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance for its significant and valued contributions to the human rights of the residents of the District of Columbia.

WHEREAS, the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance, a D.C. based organization, envisions a world that recognizes sexual freedom as a fundamental human right of all individuals to develop and express their unique sexuality;

WHEREAS, Victoria Woodhull was born on September 23, 1838; made history in 1872 as the first woman to run for president of the United States at a time when women did not even have the right to vote; and advocated for equal education for women, women’s right to vote, and women’s right to control their own health decisions;

WHEREAS, the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance, a District-based organization, envisions a world that recognizes the fundamental human right of all individuals to develop and express their unique sexuality and to be personally autonomous with regard to bodily integrity and expression;

WHEREAS, the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance has been a leader in crucial work to establish sexual freedom as a fundamental human right with the United Nations and other international organizations;

WHEREAS, the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance is presenting “Vicki” awards, given to individuals or organizations whose work or life embodies the mission and vision of the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance to affirm sexual freedom as a fundamental human right;

WHEREAS, the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance issues a yearly report on “The State of Sexual Freedom in the United States” and exists as a hub for scholarship, writing, information, and action on sexual freedom and all the rights encompassed therein;

WHEREAS, on Friday, September 23, 2011, the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance will release the “State of Sexual Freedom in the United States, 2011 Report”;

WHEREAS, on Friday, September 23, 2011, the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance will hold a day-long program entitled, “Sexual Freedom Day” highlighting the intersections between government policy and lawmaking, marriage, reproductive rights, personal relationships, parenting, sexual orientation, gender identification, sexual expression, and sexual practice entitled; and

WHEREAS, the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance has tirelessly advocated for the sexual freedom and human rights of the residents of the District of Columbia and the United States.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, that this resolution may be cited as the “Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance Recognition Resolution of 2011”.

Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and appreciates the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance and its contributions to sexual freedom in the District and the United States.

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in the District of Columbia Register.
