Bob Witeck on Limbaugh’s comments re: Sandra Fluke
Few of us are unfamiliar with political theater. And regrettably, most of us are all too familiar with Rush Limbaugh.
The latest flap labeling Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” is entirely characteristic of Rush and the expectations of his angry audience. Given his meanness and toilet mouth, this comes as no surprise. What political theater requires however is that all sides react.
Unsurprising, Santorum and Romney fear alienating their angry base — and Limbaugh’s clout — and merely offer simple-minded excuses and tepid reactions.
One of the real heroes (apart from Fluke) in this chapter is Georgetown University President John DeGioia, who sent a letter to students and faculty praising GU student Fluke’s congressional testimony.
“She was respectful, sincere, and spoke with conviction. She provided a model of civil discourse. This expression of conscience was in the tradition of the deepest values we share as a people.”
In contrast, DeGioia had harsh words for Limbaugh’s attacks on Fluke, saying they “can only be described as misogynistic, vitriolic, and a misrepresentation of the position of our student.”
